Otis Maclin

The Iowa Gravel Series doesn’t have a lot of divisions. We don’t do masters or single speed or fat tire… and, maybe we should, but it’s been tricky to find sponsors for those divisions at times. In contrast, we have a very easy time getting sponsors for junior division. For example, CIVCO generously sponsored the Kalona Horseshoe division and we’re very grateful. The cycling community will move mountains for youth getting into the sport. And, sometimes it doesn’t take a mountain, it just takes a “big brother”.

Otis Maclin is a 13 year-old that raced and came in 3rd for the 100km junior race at Kalona. He races with the Iowa City MTB club and has a bright future. He’s been supported by his community, including Roy Hass, who has been a mentor as part of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program.

So, in this episode we learn a little bit about Otis and how he got into cycling. He seems to have a habit of getting on the podiums at races and he certainly loves that. We also chat a little bit about what it means to be young cyclist in the world of influencers, Instagram, and TikTok… speaking of which, follow Otis on TikTok at @Otis_isking for all his adventures.

We sure enjoyed getting to know Otis and we think you you will too.
